Abstract

Collaboration is at the heart of the ethos of the National Software Academy (NSA). Collaboration between staff, students and industry is developed in the NSA’s innovative project-based learning (PjBL) approach that embeds realistic work experience throughout the degree.

Students benefit from collaborating in teams on projects for real clients within a teaching environment that mirrors the workplace, providing a vibrant ‘start-up’ atmosphere. Students develop a portfolio of real projects as exemplars of their employability.

Another important factor is the nature and extent of industry engagement, where students get frequent and meaningful opportunities to engage with employers throughout their degree. These include: projects, talks and workshops, case studies, visits, mentoring and summer placements.

This talk will discuss how staff at the National Software Academy have established their collaborative approach to teaching and learning. It will also discuss how staff have developed a collaborative approach to scholarship to reflect on their approach and disseminate their findings.
