Eisteddfod 2013
Request for Contributions to the National Eisteddfod 2013
We would like to take the opportunity to engage our researchers with the publics that attend the Eisteddfod. This year, the Eisteddfod will take place from 3-10 August in Denbigh, North Wales.
The University’s presence at the National Eisteddfod will be different from the last few years, when we exhibited jointly with Techniquest and primarily targeted families with children. This year, we would like to target a wider age range of Eisteddfod attendees, so are planning two distinct spaces on the Maes for our activities.
One, the Debate Space, will offer an opportunity for talks, networking and film showings. The other, the Explore Space, will be a hub for interactive engagement with University research.
The Eisteddfod is a festival of Welsh culture and not just the Welsh language, so as long as we have a sufficient Welsh language presence, the inability to speak Welsh need not be a barrier to participating.
Lecture at the National Eisteddfod
Staff would not be expected to stay for the whole week, as we would like to offer a vibrant and changing programme of interesting activities and events to attract and stimulate a variety of audiences. We would like academics to attend but would also encourage the use of postgraduate students to support the activities (and this may be a way of increasing the number of Welsh speakers available).
Support and funding will be available to develop activities and make them bilingual where required.
Four types of contribution are invited:
- Interactive engagement with Cardiff University research
- Ideally, all three Colleges represented every day
- Interactive activities - not just people staffing a display stand
- This could be used as an opportunity to undertake research data collection, if appropriate, for example on attitudes to climate change or understanding of changes to Wales’ political structures
- The event also offers scope to gather first hand views on topics that could be used by Schools/Colleges for vibrant web content
- Networking and formal reception-style events
- The event is in North Wales, and attracts a regular, influential audience from across Wales, and presents a good opportunity to network with people from a range of organisations, professions and locations.
- The Discussion Space could be used to launch projects or findings of relevance to Wales. BBC Wales and S4C are present throughout.
- NB, these events would need to be coordinated with each other and with the PR team
- Talks targeted at specific age groups
- If you have a public talk that you would like to put on, please get in touch.
- These will need to be in Welsh, as would any opportunity for questions and answers
- Film Showings
- The discussion space could be used to showcase films about Cardiff research, for example, ENCAP have produced a film about the memories of Asian people living in South Wales about the Indian Partition.
- If you have films that may be suitable, please get in touch. We will need to arrange Welsh subtitles or voiceover for films that aren’t already in Welsh.
If you’d like to get involved or want to discuss your ideas, please email community@cardiff.ac.uk or phone Bruce Etherington, Community Engagement Manager, on extension 76934.
To allow sufficient time for activities to be developed and added to the programme, please get in contact by Friday 3rd May.
