Neuroscience Cafe on Thursday 3rd December 2009

The Postgraduate Cardiff Neuroscience Society is proud to present our 2nd Neuroscience Cafe of this academic year on...

"What does science understand about consciousness? In healthy and abnormal brain states"

Consciousness is still a mystery for (neuro)science and a topic neuroscience knows little about. What is consciousness exactly and how is it represented in the brain? What does neuroscience actually know about different conscious states? How do we explain different states of consciousness seen in abnormal brains (e.g. epilepsy or psychosis) or in people that have much better control over their conscious state (e.g. meditation and spirituality)? Aren't we just at the start of gaining an understanding of the scientific background of consciousness?

We have three speakers for you:
- Khalid Hammandi, Cardiff and Vale, NHS Trust, on "Epilespy and consciousness"
- Chris Allen, School of Psychology on "Psychological theories of consciousness"
- John Anderson, School of Psychology on "Mystical experiences and spirituality"

The Cafe will begin at 6pm, with FREE pizza, wine, cheese and nibbles!

At 6.15pm, each speaker will give an introductory talk, then the floor will open for questions and discussion!! Please join us in a discussion on different views of consciousness and broaden each others understanding of an important, but mystical topic!
