The aim of this exciting, contemporary and varied programme is to produce graduates who have first class academic and employability skills to prepare them for a successful career in a range of different fields.

In Modern Wales, with the growth of institutions such as the Welsh Government and the introduction of the Welsh Language Standards, the ability to use the Welsh language at a professional level is very appealing to employers. Similarly, there is increasing demand for graduates with vocational skills and experience.

The programme will provide a specific core pathway with a strong vocational focus that will nurture awareness and skills which are appropriate both for the professional workplace and for studying Welsh. The aim is to equip you with knowledge, understanding and skills relevant to the Welsh language. This includes careers that demand specific knowledge and skills, such as translation, linguistic planning and language policy, education or the heritage industry, but there is also emphasis on transferrable skills. These will enable the workforce to use Welsh ‘in more practical, creative and interesting ways’ as noted by the First Minister at the launch of his government’s vision for one million Welsh speakers by 2050.

“Language skills are invaluable in the modern Welsh workplace, not only for specialists roles, but also in order to create rich and diverse workforces who are central to the economic and cultural life of the nation.”
Manon Wyn Humphreys, National Museum Wales,

Key facts

  • 100% of graduates in employment or further study six months after graduating (DLHE 2017).
  • 92% of students are satisfied with their overall experience (NSS 2017).
  • Two periods of work experience (in your second and third year).

The wide range of optional modules, from marketing to accounting, all examine real-world and relevant topics with a high standard of teaching. Having undertaken the Integrated Work Placement route, my 5-month placement provided me with an invaluable insight into understanding business in practice and being able to apply what I’d learnt in lectures and seminars to the workplace.”

Deciding to go abroad as part of my undergraduate studies was possibly the best decision I’ve ever made. I chose to study at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, and while I was there I got the chance to pick classes from almost any faculty. I would definitely recommend a year abroad to anyone, it added so much to my university experience and gave me memories and friends I’ll have for years to come.

German is the native language of nearly 100 million people. To speak German is to be part of a vibrant cultural, economic and political world. Not surprisingly therefore, a recent survey by the UK’s leading employers’ organisation, the Confederation of British Industry (CBI), rated German as the language most valued by UK managers.
