International emergencies: China and Myanmar

Cardiff University staff and students have been deeply shocked and saddened to see the devastating effects of the earthquake in China and the cyclone in Myanmar. The entire University community’s sympathies are with all those who have been affected and their families.

The University is offering extra services to help students at this difficult time. It will individually support any student who has been affected, either directly or indirectly, in any way it can. Anyone with concerns about loved ones who may have been caught up in the tragedies is welcome to use the phones at the International Development Division to communicate with their families. Please call at the Division’s offices at 42, Park Place, and any of the international officers will be willing to help.

For Students

The University’s comprehensive range of support services is available to all of its students.

Any student who has been affected can contact the advisors and counsellors at one of two Student Support Centres.

These are located at:

  • 50 Park Place and
  • Cardigan House on the University Hospital site.

The Centres offer a confidential environment where trained professionals can provide advice on practical and personal matters or psychological counselling.

International students can also call 02920 874844 and ask to speak to the international student advisers, Jenny Clements and Julie Davies. They have experience of providing confidential advice and support to international students on wide range of personal, financial and academic matters. They can also be contacted via studentsupportcentre@cardiff.ac.uk . Students can also contact their personal tutors or the International Development Division for help, advice and support.

Cardiff Chinese Students and Scholars Association is offering support for students from the area devastated by the earthquake or who have been affected by it in any way. It is also collecting on campus for the Red Cross efforts to help the victims of the disaster. For further information, please contact Association president Minhao Gu at minhao0812@hotmail.com .

For Staff

The staff counsellor, Tina Abbott, is also available to talk to members of staff who have been affected by either disaster. To make an appointment, contact Keith Lynch at the staff counselling service on 029 2087 9572 or email staffcounselling@cardiff.ac.uk.
