Welsh Medium schools visit the School of Chemistry

28 February 2012

The School of Chemistry recently hosted a laboratory-based event, welcoming around eighty A-level pupils from eight different Welsh medium schools from across Wales. The day provided an opportunity for pupils to work in laboratories dedicated to synthetic chemistry, as well as giving access to state-of-the-art spectroscopic analytical equipment. The day involved the synthesis of highly coloured organic azo dyes and their optical characterisation using UV-vis electronic spectroscopy, as well as workshop-based sessions allowing revision of key points.

The day was run with the help of Dr Dayna Mason (Royal Society of Chemistry Regional Coordinator) who also worked with teachers, supporting RSC educational activities.

The School of Chemistry would like to thank all teachers and pupils for attending and making the day such an enjoyable success.

We look forward to seeing the schools again later this year!

The attending schools were:

Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhymni

Ysgol Gyfun Rhydywaun

Ysgol Gyfun Gartholwg

Ysgol Gyfun Gwynllyw

Ysgol Gyfun Glantaf

Ysgol Gyfun Plasmawr
