Cardiff University Open Day
21 September 2011
On Saturday 17th Sept, the University as a part of the European Heritage Open Doors initiative, welcomed visitors to explore the history and architecture of the University buildings, to exhibit our research, and to give a taste of what actually goes on inside ! There were also several exhibits within an interactive zone specifically aimed at children.
Dr David Willock and two PhD students - Chris Lee and Scott Hoh - explained to the young and the old, the basis of several types of atomic microscopy, perfectly illustrated by the "tennis ball" STM (scanning tunneling microscope). They explained how STMs provide images of the individual atoms within the surfaces of materials and how this understanding is being used within the School of Chemistry and the Cardiff Catalysis Institute to design new environmentally friendly catalysts for the chemicals industry.
