The Cardiff Spring Conference was held in the School of Chemistry on 16th - 17th May 2011. Seven distinguished invited speakers gave lectures
on a range of topics, ably supported by six Cardiff postgraduate students presenting aspects of their PhD research. Postgraduate students also presented results of their research on more than 50 posters.
The external speakers were Professor Sir Fraser Stoddart, FRS (Northwestern University, Evanston; Nanoporous Carbohydrate Metal-Organic Frameworks), Professor John Pickett, FRS (Rothamsted Research; Using Organic Chemistry to Help Molecular Biology Realise its Potential), Professor Daan Frenkel, FMRS (University of Cambridge; Numerical Study of DNA-Functionalised Particles), Professor Phil Bartlett (University of Southampton; SERS on Nanostructured Surfaces and Application to DNA Detection and Discrimination), Professor Dennis Dougherty (California Institute of Technology, Pasadena; Physical Organic Chemistry on the Brain: Understanding the Nicotine Receptor), Professor Sven Lidin (Lund University, Sweden; Understanding Incommensurate Composite Structures (or at least trying)), and Professor Duncan Bruce (University of York, winner of the Tilden Medal of the RSC 2011; Using N-Heterocycles and their Complexes in Liquid Crystals: Non covalency, Phosphorescence and Heterogeneous Catalysis).
The supporting lectures were given by Thomas Fricke, Andrew Smith, James Wixey, Edward Holland, Gin Keat Lim and Marco Piccinini
