Research Interests
My research interests encompass surface science and heterogeneous catalysis, and attempts to link the two fields through for example the use of model catalyst systems, which can be studied using surface science techniques – XPS, UPS, STM and ISS. Quantitative surface characterisation of ‘real’ catalysts using XPS is very valuable when trying to correlate the state of the catalyst surface with catalyst performance, and this approach has been applied to a wide range of systems, including hydrogen peroxide synthesis, selective oxidation catalysis and novel catalyst preparation techniques.
I am the director of the EPSRC-funded XPS Access facility hosted at Cardiff which provides a free service to UK HE research groups http://www.cardiff.ac.uk/chemy/staffinfo/xpsaccess/
