Stijn Smismans holds a PhD from the European University Institute (EUI), and is Professor of Law and holder of the Jean Monnet Chair in European Law and Governance. Before joining Cardiff University he has been Jean Monnet Fellow at the Robert Schuman Centre of the European University Institute, Marie Curie Fellow at the Institut d'Etudes Politiques in Paris, Visiting Fellow at the Department of Politics of the University of Bristol, and Lecturer and Senior Researcher at the Faculty of Sociology of the University of Trento. He has published extensively on multi-level governance, new policy-instruments, interest intermediation, social policy, fundamental rights and democratic and institutional design in the EU, and has worked on research projects financed by the European Commission, the European Foundation for Living and Working Conditions, the European Economic and Social Committee, and the Italian Ministry for University Education, and equally provided expertise to the EP and Committee of the Regions. Currently he is Principal Investigator of the research project LASI, Law Science and Interests in European Policy-making, funded by the European Research Council.
