What is the Career Management Skills Programme?

A series of 50 minute workshops delivered in your department by members of the Careers Service. By running workshops in your department we can tailor our materials to make them relevant to your subject of study and can minimise disruption by saving you the walk to the Careers Service.

Workshop titles include:

Introduction by Career Consultant

This is a chance to meet the Career Consultant responsible for your school; to find out more about the range of services available to you, including one to one support; and an opportunity to get some general ideas about careers available to graduates in your degree subject.

Introduction to Career Planning

This session will help you to identify broad career options, and to take a closer look at your personal skills, interests and motivations in the context of career planning. Also find out what employers are looking for in new graduates (not just a degree!)

Planning your Work Experience

Employers value graduates who have some work experience. This workshop (aimed at first year students) will raise your awareness of various types of work experience and will reveal the sources, schemes and support available to optimise work experience opportunity during your time at university.

Work Experience - Make It Count

This second year workshop provides a recap on work experience options and benefits, and then looks at how to prepare for and get the most out of placements and paid work. In addition, this session covers different learning styles, personal development plans and reflective logs, and provides tips on adapting to life in the workforce.

How to get a Placement/Internship

This workshop will develop your knowledge and understanding of the structured placement programmes available to you, and their application processes

Are You Employable?

Employability, what does it mean to you, what does it mean to employers?  This workshop looks at definitions of employability and focuses on helping you draw out the employability skills you will have gained from activities such as work experience, paid work, volunteering or any other extra curricular projects that you have been involved in since starting at University.

How to Find a Job

This workshop will help you to identify a range of re-active and pro-active job search techniques and outline the sources of further help available and how to access them.

CV Know How

If you don’t make a good first impression on paper you won’t make it to the interview stage. This workshop will show you how to use different CV layouts, and to tailor your CV to match individual employers’ requirements. You will also find out what should be included in your covering letter.

Application Forms

This session is designed to help you understand what employers are looking for in competency based applications and how to present yourself, on paper and on-line, to best effect.

Interview Skills

“Tell me about yourself”, “What are your weaknesses?”, “Why should we employ you?” Ever wondered how to answer those tricky interview questions? This session shows you how to prepare for interviews and present yourself in the best possible light in person. Learn how to handle difficult questions and get an insight into the competency based interview technique.

Assessment Centres

Assessment Centres form part of the selection process for many employers. They range from a half day process to two days or more. This workshop gives you an introduction to what to expect at an assessment centre, and provides hints and tips on how to do well in the individual and group exercises.
