Employability

EMPLOYABILITY – WHAT’S ALL THE FUSS ABOUT?

You’ve heard the word, you’ve been taught the skills since year 9, but what does it really all mean? Why is employability a word that just won’t go away?

The answer is obvious, of course – at some point, university and the lifestyle that goes with it is going to end. You’re going to enter the big, wide world of work and when that happens, you want to be prepared, ready for action and able to get the best job that you can.

So what is employability? Cardiff University Employability and Enterprise Strategy defines it as:

  • “A set of skills, knowledge and personal attributes that make an individual more likely to secure and be successful in their chosen occupations to the benefit of themselves, the workforce, the community and the economy”

True, but the definition takes a while to understand. Another definition might be:

  • “Having the right skills and experience to get the job you want”.

Or you could even put it into an equation:

  • E = s + x + r✓ul8

Employability = skills + experience + the ability to articulate it.

The bottom line is that by the end of your degree you will both need and want to move onto something else. You degree will have taught you so much and given you confidence in your abilities – transferring this into the workplace is what makes it all worthwhile.

There are many opportunities to develop these all important employability skills both in your degree and outside of your studies. This part of the website will show you how.

We are working on the content of this now and it should be live very soon. Meanwhile, please look at the rest of the Careers and Employability website to get you started.
