A Tribute to Dr Helen Robinson
Dr. Helen Robinson 28th June 1963 – 25th May 2007
It is with great sadness that Cardiff Business School announces the death of Dr. Helen Robinson. Helen was tragically killed in a motorcycle accident on Friday 25th May. The thoughts of everyone at the School are with her family and friends at this time.
Helen joined the School as a Research Associate with the Economics Section in 1998 and was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2005. Helen was an excellent and respected teacher and researcher. Her work on low pay and gender was of the highest academic standards but always informed and was informed by her concern for the disadvantaged. Amongst the awards and accolades she won for her research the Low Pay Commission award for her paper on “The effect of the minimum wage on the incidence of second job holding in Britain” was the most recent. She was also a Leverhulme Research Fellow between 2000-2002.
Professor Patrick Minford, Head of the Economics Section, said, “We have lost a good friend and an ideal colleague in Helen. We will miss her dreadfully. She carried a heavy teaching load and was an excellent teacher. She was very active in research and her entry for the upcoming RAE was at a high level. She will leave a huge gap in the section and she leaves us with heavy hearts.”
Helen has a great many friends within the Business School and will be very sadly missed…..
“Helen was a wonderful friend and a supportive and committed colleague. She will be remembered for her great zest for life, her strong values and her academic and personal integrity. We all appreciated her kindness, good humour and sense of fun. She lived her life to the full and her loss will be felt by her friends at CARBS for many years to come.”
Economics students have also been paying tribute to Helen:
“We are shocked and saddened by the news. She was a lecturer who was greatly admired by us all. She was always there to help, encourage us to do our best and believed in our abilities. Our thoughts are with her family and the lecturing staff, especially those who were privileged to work closely with her and knew her well.”
Helen’s funeral will take place at 12 noon on Monday 11th June at Thornhill Cemetery, Thornhill Road, Cardiff. The family have asked that people attending inform Donna Beckerley (029 20876792)
