The College of Biomedical and Life Sciences brings together eight schools with immense strength in research and teaching, not just in Wales, but the UK and worldwide.

The College has flagship teaching and learning facilities including the School of Biosciences, named after Nobel Prize winning Chancellor Sir Martin Evans. The Hadyn Ellis building which opens later on this year will house two of the University’s Research Institutes which will be carrying out innovative research and gaining new knowledge in the fight against cancer and the scourge of mental illness.

Professor Dylan Jones is Pro-Vice Chancellor to the College of Biomedical and Life Sciences. A former head of the School of Psychology, he played a leading role in establishing the school as one of the largest and best in the UK, including the development of the Cardiff University Brain Imaging Centre (CUBRIC) and creating funds for the Wales Autism Research Centre (WARC).

The College is also passionate about engaging with the community and widening access to health services. Prime examples include the dental outreach clinic in the Cynon Valley where fifth-year School of Dentistry students provide vital services to an estimated 10,000 people in the area who do not have a dentist. A team of dental students also visited Ghana to offer dental education and treatment to residents in some of the country’s most remote villages.

The School of Healthcare Sciences’ Nursing for All project aims to widen opportunities for people to access the nursing profession from communities not traditionally represented. The School of Optometry and Vision Sciences is innovative in its support of professional development and is currently the only school in the UK to offer teaching and support to optometrists looking to improve their professional skills.

The College is proud of its world-leading research: from tackling alcohol related violence, helping families struggling to conceive, researching new drugs and fighting diseases like cancer and mental illness, the possibilities are endless.

The College encompasses the following Academic Schools:

Biosciences
Dentistry
Healthcare Sciences
Medicine
Optometry and Vision Sciences
Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences
