Field Courses

The Danau Girang Field Centre is a focus for biodiversity research and training and for field courses in tropical biodiversity assessment. Direct experience of wild animals and plants in their natural habitats continues to be an important part of modern biology. The School of Biosciences runs a full range of courses to give you essential hands-on experience of modern techniques and practical skills in field biology. Orang-utans implanted with transmitters before release: A Sabah Wildlife Department initiative in collaboration with Danau Girang Field Centre and the NGO HUTAN
As part of the conservation effort into further understanding of orang-utan behaviour and ecology, Sabah Wildlife Department have successfully implanted transmitters into three orang-utans at Sepilok Orang-utan Rehabilitation Centre. To read more about this effort please click here.

Wild Cat meeting
On 4 and 5 November, Benoît Goossens was invited to participate in a workshop themed “First steps towards the conservation of wild cats in Sabah”, co-organised by the Sabah Wildlife Department, Universiti Malaysia Sabah, the Global Canopy Programme, Bornean Wild Cat and Clouded Leopart Project and the Wildlife Conservation Research Unit (Oxford, UK), with funding provided by the Darwin Initiative (UK) and Universiti Malaysia Sabah. Orangutan Conservation Colloquium
On 1 and 2 October, Benoît Goossens attended an Orangutan Conservation Colloquium themed “Developing Models for Orangutan Conservation Within Fragmented Ecosystems”, at the Shangri-la’s Rasa Ria Resort. The colloquium was jointly organized by the Sabah Wildlife Department, the Borneo Conservation Trust, the NGO Hutan, the Malaysian Palm Oil Council, the Sabah Land and Survey Department and the Sabah Forestry Department. The Mohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund
In June 2009, the Mohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund www.mbzspeciesconservation.org allocated $25,000 to Danau Girang Field Centre and Dr Benoît Goossens to carry out research and conservation work on the Kinabatangan elephant population. Funds will help facilitate the collection of information on the elephant social organization in the Kinabatangan using satellite-collaring, behavioural observations and genetic data. They will also contribute to the professional training of a young Malaysian scientist, Miss Nurzhafarina Othman who will register for a PhD at Cardiff University. Finally, the project will help to monitor the Kinabatangan elephant population, together with the Elephant Conservation Unit in Sukau and the Sabah Wildlife Department.

Benoît Goossens and Nurzhafarina Othman in Chiang Mai, Thailand
Benoît Goossens and Nurzhafarina Othman, from Danau Girang Field Centre, travelled to Chiang Mai, in Thailand, from 11 to 19 February 2009 to attend the third conference of the Association of Tropical Biology and Conservation Asia-Pacific Chapter.
