‘Businesses want graduates who not only add value but who have the skills to help to transform their organisation in the face of continuous and rapid economic and technological change.’ (CBI)
Our School believes strongly that providing you with the opportunity to gain the necessary work experience is a fundamental part of your education and future. For this reason, all of our degree programmes are offered with a work placement year (called the Professional Training Year or PTY).
In order to provide our students with the best possible experience of biotechnology, we believe that an industry based work placement is essential. For this reason, all students are enrolled on a four year programme from the very start. The placement year will help you to develop practical skills in a professional laboratory or desk-based environment, allowing you to observe the structure and operation of the employer's organisation, as well as acquiring essential work experience for your employment profile.
The School has excellent links with biotechnology companies and, over the past few years biotechnology students have secured research and development placements with employers involved in all aspects of biotechnology: pharmaceuticals and chemicals; food and drink; agriculture; biomedical research; genetic engineering and recombinant or transgenic products. We will guide you through the process of securing a suitable work placement and continue to support you during the placement and on your return to University where you will have to write a report, which will be assessed as part of your degree programme.
