Skokholm Island, Wales
This course is based on the island of Skokholm, located off the coast of Pembrokeshire in South Wales. It is considered to be one of the jewels of the Welsh coastline, and is famous for its seabird colonies, making it an important eco-tourism destination.
The general emphasis of this field course is on the nature of the island ecosystem and its distinctiveness from the adjacent mainland. You will receive an introduction to island ecology through an extended walking tour of Skokholm's coastal paths and surveys of key areas of ecological interest.
You will work on two research projects during your time on the island; a dawn to dusk group project (working in shifts) and a personal research project carried out in small groups, which you will choose, design and execute.
We have in the past offered the opportunity to sleep out under the stars in the middle of a shearwater colony – an unforgettable experience for those brave enough to do so.
There is a fee associated with this field course. Further information can be provided on request.
