'I have always found the workshop an invaluable resource, both in the change in pace from the atmosphere of the studios and the ability to represent your designs in such a tangible manner. The staff always enable you to realise your design project effectively and innovatively, often getting as enthusiastic about your work as you are.'
'While I am not as adventurous in the workshop as many of my contemporaries, the staff's ready help and enthusiastic explanations have given me the confidence to use several different tools and methods to improve my architectural modelling and presentation. It's invaluable having a well-stocked and well-run workshop to help us in our design work.'
'Really knowledgeable staff who go out of their way to help you!'
'I used the workshop a lot to produce models for my final show. The staff were amazingly supportive and helpful. They advised me on where to source materials, gave me tips on how to creatively use materials and guided me though all the stages of making. Their help was invaluable and their encouragement really kept me going!'
'For me the workshop has been an invaluable resource allowing us to create 3 dimensional and tectonic models in order to support and explore my work. Whether it's piecing together scraps for an explorative model or creating a final presentation piece it's a break from the computer that often allows me to see more clearly. In those situations where I'm not sure how to approach a physical model the staff are always happy to help work out a method based on their extensive experience.'
'The workshop is the best place to start from, when making any kind of model! The staff are great and can answer pretty much every question one might have about models and working with different materials - from, how to acquire the things you need, to how to put them together. Working in the workshop is the best way to really start thinking technically and experience first-hand how things actually come together. There is hardly a limit to what one can achieve there.'
'The workshop staff are extremely friendly and helpful. They're more than willing to help with any project, and their great attitude makes any workshop session easy and enjoyable.'
'The workshop has been a fantastic resource throughout my time at WSA; for me it is the place in the school where the idea of 'making' is embraced at its fullest. The staff are always on hand to advise and offer their expertise, and the things they have taught me can be applied far beyond the realms of architectural education!'
The workshop is run by our Craftsman Dan Tilbury who has skills in carpentry, design, and model making. During opening hours Dan is on hand to advise, guide and aid students in all aspects of architectural model making and installation construction. We aim to provide a safe and creative environment where students with varying degrees of experience can work confidently to produce innovative and diverse high standard work. The WSA has a strong making ethos and students are encouraged to explore working with many mediums and techniques; current students have produced models using processes from steam bending to multi layered routing and the workshop staff are always keen to enable students to investigate new ideas.
Open Monday to Friday, 9:00 - 5:00 and located alongside the studios, the workshop is widely equipped with a range of bench mounted electrical machines, a number of portable electric tools and a large range of hand tools. All these items of equipment may be used by students after induction by one of the workshop supervisors and a short period of training. The WSA also has a specially ventilated spray-booth with three hot wire cutters.
