  • Conduct research in the area of intersection of computational design, digital fabrication, crystallography and emergent tectonics , and contribute to the overall research performance of the School and University by the production of measurable outputs including bidding for funding, publishing in national academic journals and conferences, and the recruitment and supervision of postgraduate research students.
  • Contribute to the preparation of new computational design tools that will create links between crystallographic software and design software.
  • Contribute to the development and construction of prototypes.
  • Contribute to the development of the School’s agenda in digital fabrication and/or robotic manufacturing.
  • Develop research objectives and proposals for own or joint research including research funding proposals
  • Undertake administrative tasks associated with the research project, including the planning and organisation of the project and the implementation of procedures required to ensure accurate and timely reporting
  • Prepare research ethics and research governance applications as appropriate
  • Review and synthesise existing research literature within the field
  • Participate in School research activities.
  • Build and create networks both internally and externally to the university, to influence decisions, explore future research requirements, and share research ideas for the benefit of research projects


  • Undergo personal and professional development that is appropriate to and which will enhance performance
  • Engage effectively with industrial, commercial and public sector organisations, professional institutions, other academic institutions etc., regionally and nationally to raise awareness of the School’s profile, to cultivate strategically valuable alliances, and to pursue opportunities for collaboration across a range of activities. These activities are expected to contribute to the School and the enhancement of its regional and national profile

  • To conduct research within architectural design and construction and contribute to the overall internationally recognised research performance of the School and University by the production of measurable outputs including bidding for funding, high-impact conferences, and the recruitment and supervision of research staff and postgraduate/MSc research students.
  • To independently develop research objectives, projects or proposals for own or joint research including research funding, high level outputs in the form of publications or practice-based research including acting as a PI as required. To develop research networks through national/international conference/seminar presentations.
  • To participate in School research activities.


  • To contribute to module and curriculum development taking a lead on relevant technology and design modules at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, inspiring students.
  • To carry out other forms of academic leadership and management including work associated with examinations (setting and marking paper and providing constructive feedback to students), administration, participation in committee work, and the pastoral care of students of Cardiff University.
  • To supervise the work of students including the supervision of Undergraduate and Master’s students, the co-supervision of PGR’s and acting as a PGR progress review panel member as required.
  • To act as a Personal Tutor and provide pastoral support to students.

Robotic Arm

PhD level research opportunity

Dr. Wassim Jabi, Senior Lecturer at the Welsh School of Architecture has recently secured a grant to purchase a Kuka KR60 HA (High Accuracy) robot to investigate advanced manufacturing techniques in architecture. He is also collaborating with a large international design firm and a large cement manufacturer on a research proposal to study the potential of robotic manufacturing methods in architecture.
