Responsibilities

I am course director for the Diploma/MA in Professional Studies, and also run architectural practice modules in the BArch and MArch degrees. I am also acting Director of Post Graduate Teaching.

Research interests

My research interests are in the professional and legal aspects of architecture and building procurement, both in the UK and internationally. As well as being a qualified and practicing architect, I also have a post-graduate law degree, and specialise in design liability and construction contract law. I have published extensively in this area, including a series of books on JCT standard forms of building contract (all re-published in 2011 as third editions), and the fourth edition of Which Contract? I contribute regularly to the International Construction Law Review and have contributed chapters to The Architect's Legal Handbook. My most recent book is a fifth edition of Cornes and Lupton's Design Liability in Construction, published in 2013 by Wiley-Blackwell. I am currently finalising a book on the new RIBA Construction Contracts, to be published in June 2015.

External activities

I have extensive links with the construction industry and the architectural profession. I am a partner in Lupton Stellakis (www.luptonstellakis.com). I am also a Chartered Arbitrator, and an adjudicator and expert witness.

I have held several external examiner appointments; currently I am external examiner to the British University in Dubai MSc in Construction Law and Arbitration, and to the Architects' Professional Examination Authority in Scotland. I am chair of the Construction Industry Council Liability Panel, and member of the RIBA President's Advisory Committee on Dispute Resolution (a Presidential appointment). I have twice been elected to the Architects Registration Board (ARB), serving from 2006-2012. During this time I represented ARB on the Architects Council of Europe (ACE).
