Steve Coombs
Steve Coombs’s design research is focused around the broad field of tectonics and the craft of making. I believe that the notion of ‘architect as builder’ is informed through using and understanding local materials and skills. Through live design projects I explore and prototype designs, in collaboration with the local timber, masonry and steel industries. In each case, projects are designed with an understanding of what materials will be used, what sizes are available and how they will be assembled. Concept diagrams are replaced by traditions, place, materials and crafts with design innovation emerging through an iterative process of modelling, drawing and detailing.
