Research Interests
My research interests include all aspects of sustainable development at an urban scale. Particular interests include identification, prediction, planning and promotion of sustainability issues in the built environment to improve environmental, economic and social issues at an urban scale.

Research Activities

For more than 14 years my research activities have centred on monitoring and modelling the urban built environment in order to encourage varied aspects of sustainability to different population groups. My research activities include: Urban scale monitoring of the built environment to predict energy use and related emissions for buildings and transport. This work has been practically applied to a number of real projects in the UK and abroad. This urban scale modelling was expanded to include the investigation of links between the built environment and health looking at internal atmosphere and respiratory health, the home environment and accidents and injuries and the neighbourhood and mental health. This research involved the development and application of a number of different surveys that investigated both the built environment and members of the public.

Space syntax techniques have been developed and validated to investigate traffic flow patterns on an urban scale and have also been utilised to investigate future locations of urban cycle networks, which also included survey work.

In order to promote to sustainability to the wider population, the European funded Practical Evaluation Tools for Urban Sustainability project, involved the development of a decision support system for stakeholders to increase the sustainability of infrastructure projects including environmental, social and economic impacts.

Current work includes involves investigating how carbon reductions can be achieved through appropriate design and management of the urban built environment from building to urban scale. Research involves the investigation of minimising energy use and associated emissions from buildings and examines the indirect energy impacts of infrastructure developments. Work has involved investigating and disseminating sustainable design of schools and retrofitting social housing.
