2008 AIA/UK Student Design Charrette [Oct 2008]

Reflecting Wales Exhibition [Oct 2008]

The Reflecting Wales exhibition is open at the Welsh Assembly Senedd building, in Cardiff Bay, from Sun 26th October to noon on Sun 2nd November. Free and open to the public, the exhibit celebrates innovative work - conceptual and built - in the built environment, located in Wales or by architects, designers, artists and students residing in Wales. Students at the wsa take part in the Mukono Project

Three Architecture students from the Welsh School of Architecture, Cardiff University, James Mitchell, Julissa Kiyenje and Su Mei Tan, along with a student studying Building Surveying in Birmingham, Oliver Sum, have designed a kitchen for New Hope Orphanage in Mukono to replace the current one and help build it
over the summer. They arrived on the 14th of August
and construction began on the 18th of August 2008..visit website for more information
arq Wins Prize [Sept 2008]

'Architectural Research Quarterly [arq] - published by Cambridge University Press and edited by a team at the wsa led by Richard Weston - has won a prize at the American Association of University Presses' Book, Jacket and Journal Show 2008. arq wins the only prize in the journals category. It is a leading research journal in architecture; innovative in conception, unique in breadth and generously illustrated. arq publishes worldwide research in design, history, theory, construction, structures, environmental design, materials, information technology and practice. This follows arq's previous win of the Charlesworth/ALPSP Learned Journal Award in 2002.'

2nd Place win in IBPSA Conference Poster Competition [Aug 2008]

Du Hu has won 2nd place in the poster competition at the IBPSA-USA conference in Berkeley California. Du's poster was titled ' A case study using simple CFD modelling software: WinAir4'. More than 20 students attended the competition and most of them were PhD students from the US. Teh first place was awarded to a master student from the University of California and the third place was given to one PhD student from Purdue University.

AMD Open Architecture Challenge | Asia [July 2008]

Rob Rickey, a student studying for our MSc in Environmental Design of Buildings, has won an honourable mention in an international design competition, the AMD Open Architecture Challenge, Asia. Working with colleagues from the Exeter studio of Lacey Hickie Caley Ltd, he drew on his MSc training in satisfying the brief’s requirements for sustainability. Their design for a telemedicine clinic in Nepal. can be seen on http://www.openarchitecturenetwork.org/challenge/asia. Rob is a distance student in his final year.
Du Hu Awarded student Scholarship [July 2008]

Du Hu, an MSc Modelling student at the WSA, has been awarded a student scholarship in order to attend and participate in the SimBuild 2008 3rd National Conference of IBPSA-USA on July 30th- August 1st in Berkeley California. Du will be taking part in the poster competition of the conference, with a poster titled ‘a case study using simple CFD modelling software: WinAir4’.

The Independent published their 'Complete University Guide' on Thursday, 24 April 2008 and placed the School (Cardiff) at the top of the league table for Architecture (Top Universities for Professions). We are the only academic school in Cardiff to be first in the range of league tables they publish. It is excellent news for the School.
