Tom Sykes Awarded Commendation

Tom Sykes, who graduated from our MArch last year has been awarded a Commendation in the RIBA President's Medals 2012 for his dissertation:

The Site as Muse: Georges Perec and Walking into Topophilia

"The dissertation was a chance to get to grips with two things that fascinated and inspired me, the work of Georges Perec with his playful and intimately insightful prose about places, and my interest in the ways that the site of a project is able to influence and guide a design process. The idea that designing could be guided by the way we create our earliest recordings has always been particularly alluring, and with this written project I was able to fine tune ideas about the site and its nature to help guide the actual design thesis, and hopefully the way I design throughout the rest of my life." Tom Sykes

His work was commended by the jury as 'a rigorous, coherent and immaculately written piece'
