Tom Bassett, LCRI Researcher, discusses urban solar reflections in the Architect's Journal

The Architect's Journal is featuring an article by Welsh School of Architecture's Tom Bassett, reflecting on the recent intense solar reflections as generated by Rafael Viñoly's 'Walkie Talkie' building.

Coined the 'London Death Ray,' the beam is a result of the combination of the concave, looming design of the south-facing facade, the glazing specifications of the building's windows, and the sun's location in the clear sky. The phenomenon is not new; the 'Walkie Talkie' is but one of many buildings which create a focussed reflection, including Viñoly's own Vdara Hotel in Las Vegas.

However, the subsequent property damage caused by the beam is a result of a different combination of issues, as Tom explains in the article.
