Research Interests
I have been active in the field of research into the performance of buildings and building elements since 1981. My current research interests are:

- Holistic design of buildings and services
- The energy performance of A/C systems
- Energy profiles of buildings and services
- Integration of Renewable Energy Systems, Thermal Energy Storage and Buildings
- Energy consumption of activities in buildings

Research activities
For over 20 years my research activities have been focussed on reducing Carbon emissions from the Built Environment without affecting the quality of the amenities enjoyed by its users.
This research has been primarily funded by Government and/or Industry, and has ranged from fundamental research, e.g. to establish the actual energy consumption of Air Conditioning Systems in Offices, through to a Teaching Company Scheme with a local SME.

External activities
I am: Vice-Chairman of the Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) Combined Heat and Power (CHP) Group (formed October 2003), which supersedes the CIBSE CHP Panel of which I was Chairman.

  • A member of the CIBSE Policy and Consultation Committee.
  • Leader of Subtask A for the International Energy Agency Energy Conservation in Buildings and Community Systems Programme Annex 42: FC+COGEN-SIM:The Simulation of Building-Integrated Fuel Cell and other Cogeneration Systems
  • Leader of Work Package 7 on the European Commission EIE Project “AUDITAC”. This project is to produce guidance to assist member states improve on the basic requirements of Article 9 “Inspection of air-conditioning systems” of the Energy Performance in Buildings Directive.
  • A member of the National Assembly of Wales Sustainable Energy Group (NASEG)
  • A member of the Higher Education Funding Council’s ‘Energy Management Evaluation Expert Working Group’. This was a 2001 – 2003 follow-up to the 1996 study, for which I sat on the Validation Panel.
  • Invited expert on the Further Education Funding Council for Wales Energy Working Group.
