Official Opening of the Cardiff HPC Centre of Excellence

To mark the Official Opening of the Cardiff HPC Centre of Excellence, jointly hosted by ARCCA and Bull, a series of brief presentations showcased the new SRIF-3 procured supercomputer, the people involved in the procurement, and the journey and future vision of the partnership. Guest speakers included key figures from ARCCA and Bull, together with representatives from APC, Comtec, and the University of Düsseldorf. The event took place in the University's Redwood Building (Building number 33 on the map - click on Redwood building for full address and directions) Cybercafe from 9:15am.
Lunch provided an opportunity to meet delegates, view posters highlighting research being undertaken at Cardiff, and to take part in a tour of the brand new machine room.
A research seminar "Accelerating Discovery using Advanced Research Computing" took place in the afternoon in the Bute Building Lecture Theatre 1.61 (Building number 45 on the map) completing the series of events to celebrate the launch of ARCCA.

Fabio Gallo (Director of HPC Business Unit, Bull) jointly welcomes and starts the Official Opening of the Cardiff HPC Centre of Excellence with Martyn Harrow (Director of Information Services - seated front row in the Audience), held over in the Cybercafe in the Redwood building.
Note the room was "transformed" for the event by Drake AV who provided all the screens, stage, lectern, lights and sound for the event.

Martyn Guest (Director of ARCCA) starts the proceedings with a presentation providing the background and context to how ARCCA was established and its mission to enable the research across all the schools and departments in Cardiff University.

Peter Ingram (Bull UK) explores the importance of collaboration and the goals and objectives of the Cardiff HPC Centre of Excellence, interspersed with good Brummy humour!

Jean-Marc Denis (HPC Business Manager, Bull Group) describes the Supercomputer solution which Bull proposed and delivered to Cardiff University.

Centre of Excellence sign, officially unveiled by the Rt. Hon. Rhodri Morgan AM during the ARCCA Launch on the 2nd June 2008. The sign was created by the Manufacturing Engineering Centre (MEC) at Cardiff University.
