Green Gown Awards 2009
National Recognition for the ARCCA Data Centre
28 June 2009
The Advanced Research Computing at Cardiff (ARCCA) data centre has been ‘highly commended’ in national sustainability awards.
The Green Gown Awards, endorsed by the Environmental Association for Universities and Colleges (EAUC), recognise exceptional sustainability initiatives undertaken by Universities and Colleges across the UK.
To get to the second stage, the ARCCA proposal underwent a rigorous assessment, involving 30 expert judges drawn from a range of relevant institutions including JISC, the Carbon Trust, the Learning and Skills Council and Universities UK - one of 178 applications from almost 100 institutions. Achieving a "Highly Commended" status is great recognition for all the people involved in designing, implementing and running the data centre.
ARCCA’s commendation in the Awards highlights the University's commitment to sustainability, a key consideration at every step of the way in the Centre’s development. The judges felt that ARCCA’s entry had many strengths, adding that they considered the data centre “to be a beacon of good practice for the sector”.
Professor Martyn Guest, Director of ARCCA, said: “The state-of-the–art research computing facility has truly led the way in terms of effective design and performance, using innovative modern technologies to minimise energy costs and environmental impact. The ARCCA data centre uses water-cooled hot aisle containment cubes to house the supercomputer, and this, along with its use of the latest low-power consumption technology and Carbon Trust-compliant chillers, has created an energy efficient environment to house one of the UK’s leading University supercomputers.
“We are delighted to receive a ‘highly commended’ comment in the Green Gown Awards, as they are setting the standard for sustainability in UK Higher Education”, continued Professor Guest.
“Environmental considerations are only going to become more vital within all sectors, and I am gratified to see that the University’s High Performance Computing facilities are further adding to its reputation as a global centre for research.”
