ARCCA Operational and User Group (OUG)

With representation from all schools, including both current, expert users and those from non-traditional HPC areas – potential future users – the ARCCA OUG will provide guidance across a range of operational activities, focusing on effective delivery to the research community by the ARCCA team.  A key role of the Group will be to provide input on future User needs.

The Group is serviced by the ARCCA Division Manager, and provides oversight across a spectrum of activities, including:

  • Processes and procedures to make best use of the University's existing HPC and Grid computing assets;
  • Arrangements and schedules for the management, maintenance and upgrade of facilities in line with the needs of researchers;
  • Assessment of the metrics that capture the quality, effectiveness and evolution of the service and development of ARCCA staff;
  • Mechanisms for guiding HPC in the University, looking to work with other stake holders in  operating the elements of the HPC strategic plan;
  • Contribute to a variety of awareness-raising activities beyond the immediate interests of the Group to support the growth of HPC in the University. Ensure that academic researchers throughout the University are aware of the HPC and Grid computing facilities available, both locally within the University and also at the national level;
  • Assist in educating researchers about the kinds of work that the available HPC and Grid computing facilities can be used for and provide them with points of contact for obtaining further information and assistance.

Members of the Operational and User Group are expected to use their personal expertise and judgement to contribute to the Group in a manner that aligns with both the needs and interests of Academic Schools and the wider interests of the University.

The ARCCA Operational and User Group reports to the ARCCA Oversight Group and has the following remit:

  1. To monitor the processes and procedures to make best use of the University's existing HPC and Grid computing assets;
  2. To advise on the arrangements and schedules for the management, maintenance and upgrade of facilities in line with the needs of researchers;
  3. To assess the metrics that capture the quality, effectiveness and evolution of the service and development of ARCCA staff;
  4. To provide mechanisms for guiding HPC in the University, looking to work with other stake holders in  operating the elements of the HPC strategic plan;
  5. To contribute to a variety of awareness-raising activities beyond the immediate interests of the Group to support the growth of HPC in the University. Ensure that academic researchers throughout the University are aware of the HPC and Grid computing facilities available, both locally within the University and also at the national level;
  6. To assist in educating researchers about the kinds of work that the available HPC and Grid computing facilities can be used for and provide them with points of contact for obtaining further information and assistance;
