Professor Graham Hutchings FRS

Professor Graham Hutchings is Professor of Physical Chemistry and Director of the Cardiff Catalysis Institute. He was also Head of Cardiff School of Chemistry from 1997 to 2006, during which time he established it as one of the leading Schools of Chemistry in the UK.

Professor Hutchings has had a long and distinguished research career, primarily in the field of heterogeneous catalysis.  In 2009, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS) for his pioneering contributions in the use of gold for catalysis. One of the highest honours in the scientific world, these Fellowships are widely regarded as second only to a Nobel Prize in prestige.

Professor Hutchings held a number of teaching and research positions before coming to Cardiff in 1997, including Lecturer and Professor at the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, and Deputy Director of the Leverhulme Centre for Innovative Catalysis at the University of Liverpool.

He has also held a number of visiting appointments at Universities around the world. Most recently, he was Professor in Residence at the Université Pierre et Marie, Paris and is currently a Visiting Professor at Tokyo Metropolitan University.
