Mr Richard (Dick) Roberts CBE
Dick Roberts has been a member of the University’s Council and Court since 1992 and of the Strategy and Resources (formerly Planning and Resources) Committee since 2000.
Mr Roberts was President of UWIST Students' Union from 1965 to 1966, and is past Chairman of the UWIST Association of Past Students and former President of the University's Association of Past Students. A self-employed optometrist, he graduated from UWIST (BSc 1966) and was a part-time lecturer in UWIST Department of Optometry from 1969 to 1997. He was an examiner for the British Optical Association (1972-1978) and for the British College of Optometrists from 1979 to the present day (appointed Senior Examiner in 1982). He is an elected member of the General Optical Council since 1981 and Chairman of the Investigating Committee of the General Optical Council since 1986. Chairman of the Welsh Optical Committee (1981-2000) and member of the Directorate for Continuing Education and Training in Optometry since 1985, Mr Roberts was also Vice-Chairman of the Cardiff Local Health Group (1999-2003).
Mr Roberts is a Fellow of the British College of Optometrists (FBCO) and the American Academy of Optometry (FAAO). He was awarded an OBE in the New Year's Honours List in 1998, and in July 2000 he was appointed Consultant Optometric Adviser to the National Assembly of Wales, the appointment being renewed in June 2003. He was elected a Life Fellow of the College of Optometrists in April 2004 in recognition of his contribution to the profession of optometry in the UK, and in October 2006 he was conferred Honorary Membership of the Association of British Dispensing Opticians for his contribution to the furtherance of the profession.
Mr Roberts was awarded a CBE in the 2011 Queen's Birthday Honours and in 2012 he was presented with a lifetime achievement award by the Optical Confederation.
