Menna Richards

Ms Menna Richards was the first woman to be appointed to the post of Controller of BBC Wales, a post she held from 2000 – 2011.

Previously, she was Managing Director of HTV Wales, again the first woman to hold the post. She was educated at Maesteg Grammar School and at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth where she graduated in Welsh.  

As Controller of BBC Wales she was responsible for all of BBC Wales' services in English and Welsh on radio, television and online, including Dr Who; Wales Today; Pobol y Cwm; Torchwood and Scrum V.

Menna is also involved with a number of other organisations and public bodies, particularly in education and the arts. She chairs the steering committee of the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World competition.  

She is a former: Chair of the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama, board member of the Cardiff Bay Development Corporation and served as a member of the Cardiff University Council from 1995-2001.  She also served as a member of the University’s Court from 1995 for seven years and on its External Relations Committee for three years from 1998. 

On 1 August 2007, Menna became Cardiff University’s Vice-President - a position she will hold for four years; and she became an Honorary Fellow of the University on 17 July 2007.

Menna is an honorary fellow of the University of Wales, Aberystwyth and the North East Wales Institute and a fellow of the Royal Television Society.
