The quality and impact of Cardiff's research has led to a meteoric rise in the Research Excellence Framework (REF), pushing it into the UK's top 5 universities. We were also ranked as the 2nd university nationally based on the impact of our research which tackles major challenges facing society, the economy and the environment.
We're part of the Russell Group of 24 leading research intensive UK universities. Our research staff are world-class and include Nobel Laureates, Fellows of the Royal Society and members of other prestigious institutions.
Our research expertise and facilities are used by industry and commercial partners, government bodies and other organisations internationally. We help to generate business ideas and spin-out companies and contribute to economic growth and job creation in Wales and beyond. Our research contracts have a total value of £500M.
We have created four major Research Institutes to pursue new scientific approaches to some of the world's most pressing concerns:
- the European Cancer Stem Cell Research Institute is improving our understanding of the role of cancer stem cells in a range of cancers
- the Neuroscience and Mental Health Research Institute is making new discoveries and using them to better understand and diagnose mental illness
- the Cardiff Catalysis Institute is a centre of excellence for catalysis within the UK
- the Sustainable Places Research Institute brings together world-leading sustainability science, focused on exploring innovative solutions for a more sustainable future.
