Innovation

Watch our video

Innovation is in our blood. Cardiff’s history shows innovation thrives when pioneers come together to forge partnerships in the right places.

We define innovation as working together to turn ideas into new products, processes, services and/or policy developments that add value.

We have a thriving innovation culture, connecting industry, business, charities and government with our academics, nurturing student entrepreneurship and championing grass-roots business development.

We help organisations to grow. We consistently rank in the Top Five Russell Group Universities for Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) activity, with a total project value of £2.6m (2016-17).

KTPs provide knowhow and funding that can help organisations break free from established ways of working to experience new ideas and processes that boost performance and cut costs.

Our KTP projects cross a wide range of academic disciplines and sectors. A dedicated KTP team supports all our partners in every KTP, from initial enquiries right through to the delivery of results.

We generate 82% of all Higher Education Institution (HEI) IP income in Wales, and we produce 92% of HEI patents in Wales where Cardiff is named as inventor.

Our enterprising graduates have established more than 260 start-up companies in the last five years, making us the first HEI in Wales and third in the Russell Group of research-intensive UK universities for the level of graduate start-ups.

Above all, we invest in people to build partnerships in new places. Our biggest Campus upgrade for a generation - Cardiff Innovation Campus and the Centre for Student Life – will provide a crucible for future growth.

Come and join us. We are the Home of Innovation.
