A Welsh university

We aim to provide our students with the opportunity to study and live their life through the medium of Welsh.

We have a large number of Welsh speaking students studying with us. We currently offer 118 modules through the medium of Welsh. Students can choose to have a Welsh speaking personal tutor or to take exams in the Welsh medium.

The Welsh language is integral not only to our culture and society, but in fostering the economic development of Wales. We need to equip our Welsh speaking graduates with the skills to work in a bilingual nation. We will also give non-Welsh speakers the knowledge to understand and respect the implications of this.

The Welsh Language Commissioner has backed our renewed Welsh Language Scheme and holds it up as a model of good practice. The chief aim of the scheme is to ensure that Welsh will be treated equally with English when dealing with University staff, students and the general public.

We are home to the Cardiff Branch of the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol. The branch makes recommendations about Welsh medium provision to the Academic Board and considers our plans for further developments in this field. The Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol has funded Lectureships in several subjects and has also funded the studies of eight PhD students studying through the medium of Welsh.
