Merger

Cardiff University and the University of Wales College of Medicine merged in 2004 to create a larger and more dynamic University with increased capabilities and capacities based on our unification and associated additional strategic investment.
Merger created improvements in the student experience, from teaching and learning to support services, exciting new interdisciplinary opportunities and career prospects for staff, and enhanced service and returns for all our many stakeholders, including the National Health Service in Wales.
The merger was made possible by an investment of £60 million, including funding from the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales and the Welsh Assembly Government, the two universities, the UK Science Research Investment Funds and other agencies.
This significant investment has funded the merger process, new staff appointments, capital investment and development of the research infrastructure that will enable groundbreaking biomedical research at Cardiff and realise ambitious research plans that will bring benefits to Wales and the world.
