Easter Chocolate Hamper – March 2009

Thanks to all of you who bought tickets for the Easter Chocolate Box which was once again kindly donated by Kristina Rushton in RESID.  The raffle was won by Mona Jones from PLANN who enjoyed lots of yummy chocolate over the Easter holidays.  

Quiz Evening - 31 March 2009

The last SCAN Quiz took place on 31 March, Nine teams and approximately 50 staff took part.  The questions were set by the "We don't have a name" team from EUROS and included a general knowledge round, sport round, TV and film round, a picture round to identify various European countries and their pre-Euro currencies and a music round of covers to guess both the new and original artists performing.  As "Band of Bluffers" from CLAWS won again, "The Regressives" from MEDIC have volunteered to set the next quiz.

Quiz Evening - 27 January 2009

The "Band of Bluffers" from the Law School set the questions for the SCAN Quiz on 27 January.  Eleven teams and approximately 60 staff took part. One round involved a map of Britain on which major roads in Britain had to be identified, and a special collaborative round pairing teams to sort a list of famous sleuths and their respective authors, other rounds included the usual general knowledge, tv and film, sport questions.  Band of Bluffers also employed a bonus which allowed teams to choose one round on which to bet their knowledge to double their points score.  The "We don't have a name" team from EUROS won and will be setting the questions for the next quiz at the end of March.

Thank you to everyone who participated in the quiz and who bought raffle tickets - we raised £248 for SCAN.

The Vice-Chancellor's Christmas Lunch - 23 December 2008

The Vice-Chancellor’s annual Christmas lunch for the central administrative staff was once more a sell out event. (Update on sum raised to follow).

Christmas Hamper – December 2009

The Hamper was raffled to raise money for SCAN and the lucky winner was Dave Wyatt in LEARN who enjoyed the festive treats over the Christmas holidays.  Many thanks to all of you who bought tickets and update on the sum raised will follow in due course. 

Carols around the tree - 17 December 2008

On Wednesday 17 December, the Vice-Chancellor’s Office organised the annual carols around the Christmas tree in the Virami Jones Gallery, Main Building. Over 70 staff joined in the festivities, enjoying a glass of sherry and mince pies which were kindly donated and served by the University’s Chaplaincy.  Dr Tim Taylor from the School of Music once again accompanied the carol singers on the keyboard.  The session closed with ‘We Wish you a Merry Christmas’ and a short message from Louise Casella as Chair of the SCAN Committee for which a collection was made, during the event.

Quiz Evening - 28 October 2008

The “No Brainers”, from PRCOM set the questions for the quiz on Tuesday 28 October. Twelve teams and over 60 people took part that night. The questions included the usually general knowledge rounds as well as a Children's Literature round and a Song lyrics' first lines round. "Band of Bluffers" from CLAWS were the winning team and set the questions for January’s quiz.

Thank you to everyone who participated in the quiz and who bought raffle tickets - we raised £256 for SCAN (50% Tenovus, 50% Local Causes).

Quiz Evening - 1 July 2008

“Zombies ate my brain”, the Lean Team from STRAT set the questions for the SCAN quiz on Tuesday 1 July. Eleven teams and over 70 people took part that night. The questions included a film round with clips projected onto the walls of Aberdare Hall and an interactive taste round of sweets and crisps. The “No Brainers” from PRCOM were the winning team and will be setting the questions for October’s quiz.

Quiz Evening - 29 April 2008

On Tuesday 29 April Trefforest Gump from REGIS set the questions for the popular SCAN Quiz evening.  Twelve teams and over 60 people took part in the quiz that had a variety of brain teasing rounds testing staff and their friends on music and film, literature, and much more!  The winning team were "Zombies ate my brain" from the Lean team in STRAT - congratulations!  They will be setting the questions for the next quiz on 1st July.

Thank you to everyone who came along and to those of you who bought a raffle ticket.  We raised £289 for SCAN that evening -  (50% Tenovus, 50% Local Causes)

Easter Chocolate Hamper – March 2008

Many of you bought tickets for the Easter Chocolate Hamper that was kindly donated by Kristina Rushton in RESID.  The Chocolate Box was raffled to raise money for SCAN and the lucky winner was Ronnie Jones in INSRV who enjoyed lots of yummy chocolate over the bank holiday weekend.  The money raised by the Hamper was £496.

Quiz Evening – 19 February 2008 

On Tuesday 19 February the “Interlects” from INTER set the questions for the popular SCAN Quiz evening.  Eighteen teams and over 100 people took part in the quiz that had a variety of brain teasing rounds testing staff and their friends on popular culture, literature and art, lyrics of 80s pop songs and a special 125 Anniversary round on the year 1883 to name but a few!  The winning team were Trefforest Gump from Registry – congratulations REGIS!  They will be setting the questions for the next quiz which will be held on Tuesday 29 April.

Festive fun - Carols around the Tree

On Tuesday 18 December, the Vice-Chancellor’s Office organised the annual carols around the Christmas tree in the Virami Jones Gallery, Main Building.

Dr Tim Taylor from the School of Music accompanied the carol singers on the keyboard for no less than 9 carols!  Over 100 staff joined in the festivities and enjoyed a glass of sherry and mince pies which were kindly donated and served by the University’s Chaplaincy.  The session closed with ‘We Wish you a Merry Christmas’ and a short message from Louise Casella as Chair of the SCAN Committee.
Anne Pash from Tenovus also joined us on this occasion and buckets were distributed to collect some proceeds for Tenovus.  She thanked staff for their generous donations to Tenovus through SCAN and wished everyone a good Christmas and New Year.

Quiz Evening – 25 September 2007

The SCAN quiz evenings always pull in a large crowd of competitive University staff and their friends who want to compete for the treasured prize – ‘Nobby the Gnome’ and it was no different on Tuesday 25th September in Aberdare Hall. The Gum Drops from Dentistry set the questions for the evening and the winning team were the Interlects from the International Development Division.  Although the quiz is mainly a social evening, it often ends with a raffle to raise some proceeds for SCAN and we were pleased to raise £170 that evening.
