Five-a-side Football

8 July 2005

The University Sports Centre, Talybont hosted the inaugural SCAN Five-a-side Football Tournament on Friday 8 July 2005.

10 teams entered and battled their way through the group stages (literally in some cases!) for the chance to get their hands on the impressive silverware.

The early favourites from SPORT, playing under the name Real Ale Madrid, got off to a great start winning the first game 8 -0 against the brave team from PLAN. The two PSYCH teams, drawn together in group B, also looked like early championship contenders.

After all the teams had played all 4 group stage matches, and numerous aching limbs were being complained about, the final league tables were announced.

Merrill’s Muppets (JOMEC) were drawn against Athletico Allstars (PSYCH) in the first semi final, and Athletico Galactico (PSYCH) facing Real Ale Madrid (SPORT) in the second.

It took a penalty shootout to separate the first match, the Allstars eventually winning a tough encounter. An all PSYCH final was confirmed when Galactico defeated Real Ale Madrid in the second semi.

As the evening drew to a close, the crowd started heading off towards the bar. Psycho Athletico Galactico were crowned champions after a deserved 2 - 0 victory over their Psycho Athletico Allstar colleagues.

The tournament raised over £100 for the SCAN fund, so a big thanks goes out to all players that took part and to those who organised and encouraged their teams to help Nick Bartlett (University Sports Centre Supervisor) make the tournament a success:

  1. Psycho Athletico Galactico - PSYCH (Winners)
  2. Psycho Athletico Allstars - PSYCH (Runners Up)
  3. Merrils Muppets - JOMEC
  4. The Unlikely Lads - FINANCE
  5. Plannathinaikos - PLANNING
  6. Archie - ARCHI
  7. International Playboys - INTER
  8. Park Place United - GRADUATE SCHOOLS OFFICE
  9. Socsi Sambas - SOCSI
  10. Real Ale Madrid - SPORT

It is hoped that this style of tournament will be developed in future years, so get training folks - let's see if anybody can get the trophy back from the PSYCH lads next year!
