• The University opened its doors in 1883 with thirteen members of academic staff and 151 students
• At that time, it offered studies across thirteen departments: Greek, Latin, Philosophy, Maths and Astronomy, English and History, Biology, Chemistry, Welsh, French, Music, Physics & German.
• The highest-paid lecturer in 1883 earned £372 a year
• There were 15 full-time women students in the first year's intake
• The first student newspaper (hand-written) was published in 1885
